Ivan was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Humboldt, Kan., to Alvin and Lucy Daggett, along with his twin sister, Eva, who preceded him in death. The family moved to Castroville in 1937 and Ivan graduated from Salinas High School in 1946.
Ivan worked for many years as a facilities maintenance supervisor for the Salinas Union High School District. He was significantly involved in the construction of the Salinas High football stadium as well as North Salinas and Alisal High Schools. He also served 28 years in the California National Guard.
Following his retirement in the mid-1980s, Ivan was able to spend more of his time at his beloved ranch on Old Stage Road where over the years he had grown hay, raised various animals and collected old cars, trucks and tractors. Although Ivan never had children of his own, his nephews, Ron and Robert Hedberg, served in that capacity growing up and spending countless hours with their uncle at the ranch.
Ivan was also a member of the Monterey County Sheriff's Posse for nearly 40 years and served several stints as president. He was involved in many Posse functions including the Junior Rodeo, Big Hat Barbecue and numerous trail rides. Ivan was well known throughout the Salinas Valley and will be greatly missed by many. He earned the nickname "Drivin' Ivan" and was regarded as quite a character by those who knew him well. Survivors: Wife of 44 years, Barbara; sisters, Mary Hedberg and Beulah Adams of Salinas; nephews, Ron Hedberg of Campbell and Robert Hedberg of Salinas; along with numerous other nieces and nephews.
