The MU is not part of the Posse. Several members (including the web master) belong to both units.
The host for the MU site closed 8/1/11 and for the time being the MU site will be hosted on the Posse site.

The Mounted Unit was formed in 2000 under Sheriff Gordon Sonne (1999-2003) to search for lost people.
A secondary mission is representing the Sheriff's Office at community events/activities.
The Mounted Unit provides trail assistance at County parks - first aid, directions, PR etc.
Mounted Unit members are unpaid Sheriff's Office volunteers.
They purchase and maintain their horses, trailers, uniforms, and equipment at their own expense.

Few activities attract the attention or gain the community support as the use of horses. Mounted Unit personnel will strive to leave each citizen contact with a positive impression of the Mounted Unit and the Monterey County Sheriff's Department. Mounted Unit personnel shall embrace the Community Policing philosophy

The Mounted Unit requires a lot more training than actual response to emergencies.
